Mid 1990”s Zane Harrison triple flyer pintail
This model is the last of the Pipedream Retro range. This era was only 8 years ago and perhaps could be argued is a little too modern, however one could argue that surfboard design is moving forward so fast that designs like this could be forgotten forever if not recorded.
The multiple flyer design had been around since the Hot Buttered days and we used it on some of Zane’s boards that worked a treat for him.
This model is 6.2 x 18 ¾ x 2 5/16 and has a con- vee to give the tail a little more tip at high speeds. The planshape is widish in the tail but depletes at the tail end with the use of flyers.
This gives the board the capacity to sit down at high speeds if you surf more off the tail and in smaller waves the wider tail width at the 12 “ up mark- gives the board enough plate to be thrusted and propelled in powerless waves.
The rear box allows the fin to be shifted up to an inch further forward creating an increasingly shorter arc and more pivot that is necessary at lower speeds.
Likewise in bigger waves the rear fin can be either moved back or replaced with a bigger one, or in fact both.
At the time Zane was riding this board the WQS series was predominantly in small powerless waves but there was the time when he would be caught out in bigger stuff but this model due to its versatility always rose to the occasion.
