Early 1970’s – The Guy Ormorod single flyer swallow tail single fin
THE GUY ORMOROD SINGLE FLYER SWALLOW
6.0 X 18 ¾ X 2 7/16 single flyer swallow with dropped wing.
This board became a favourite of Guy’s in the early seventies and there was a full centre spread in Surfing World magazine of Guy laying a deep cutty flashing the nose to tail Pipedream spray at the camera. We made a few of these boards for him but none went as well as the one I shaped a small flute under the flyer. According to Guy at the time the dropped wing as I later called it, gave him heaps more squirt and bight and this really livened up the board. I have applied this dropped wing in many of my late boards with the same success. Since I am not a big believer in the basic single fin in this day and age I have with this board applied some side fin boxes that can have smaller stabilizers giving the board a bit more modern bight feeling more like a tri fin than a thruster where all fins dominate. On this model the centre fin is taller and moved more forward like the old single fins and is still the alpha fin from which all emphasis is concentrated when turning.
The little side fins just speed up the on to rail process same as side thruster fins but not to the same degree; thus keeping with more of a single fin feel, but not totally.
The bottom shape on the original was a light roll but my con-vee bottom concept will make this board go faster and give it more control so again, I could not resist.
