Roughly 6 years ago I designed a Boot Model range which were a bunch of really small wide boards that could effectively fit in the boot of a car. The whole idea bombed and they just sat in the shop and festered. As they say- life is timing! Well 6 years on, the little Bobby Dazzler may have his timing right. When you look around the surfboard web sites these days the Dazzler has many close cousins, so I doubt this little number will be doing any festering.
This design is the second one in a range purely dedicated for the new fused pellet EPS I have imported of late. The Bobby Dazzler is a break from my anal belief that all tails should be pulled in, in order to hold through bottom turns. The fact that this board is really aimed at the small wave category; this departure is really a no brainer. And to be candid it is still not as barge arsed as some of the Firewire models and well, it is primarily a quad, so it can withstand some fat in the arse!
The planshape was inspired by a board I saw in a New Zealand surf magazine that seemed to make sense as a small wave five finner, so I designed it off a photo with no dimensions to go by. Being such a small board the nose rocker is quite low with a little hint of tail flip to keep the design free and spontaneous. My trade mark vee out the last 6” is a given since the tail is so wide. I have a 6 mm concave through the guts so this little cubbie house door will have some run.
I think due to the width in the tail and extreme shortness of the Dazzler my mini keels when in quad mode will ease any short board twitch so if you consider this design make sure you get the keel. The fin positions are a little more clustered than my norm but to balance this, they are a lot less toed in. Not parallel, but more so than normal. This again will give them some run coz real short boards can peter out real easy. The shortness of the board will help any tracking caused by this more parallel fin set.
GLASSING
The Dazzler being an EPS core and stringerless has a double diagonal glass top and bottom with a wide carbon strip on the deck only. This acts as a stomp pad and helps to stiffen board flex promoted by the diagonal weave. For a little more stomp protection on the tail a carbon ribbed tail patch is also included. Again the use of the long boxed power base plugs designed to encourage some personal rear fin position customization. If you were considering this design I would suggest 6” shorter than your go – to.
