Perhaps it is the environment that I have been designing for that has some influence on this design; and that is one where good waves are definitely a finite resource. I see so many guys scratching for waves on small performance thrusters amongst a pack of silver bearded 60 year old mal riders that have given up any hope of retaining the moves of their youth in order to keep up their stoke with a big wave count. I am sure that this is happening everywhere as the surf demo graph is aging but still turned on by the thrill of sliding along on one of nature’s best gifts to mankind.
The Little Pirate is an overture to those young thruster tragics- being a design that is not too bulbous and well within the range of being a board they can cut loose with and still retain a decent wave count. This model has the DNA of the Brooko MK2 which has all the high performance necessities but has been widened, particularly north of the centre point, and slightly flattened up front as well- keeping in mind wider noses have more float and planning surface and tend to ride out of a pearling situations more comfortably. They can also be ridden shorter where the downsides of a front heavy design quickly vanish with the increased short arc capacity delivered in spades by simply being shorter.
The five fin set up fits perfectly into this model because even though the nose is wider the tail is not so much so. This means they can be ridden in thruster mode in small peaky waves without any tail slide. They will come into their own in bigger waves in quad mode as proven with all my quad designs.
Another reason why I called this model the Little Pirate is that particularly in quad mode (as most quads do) the board can be turned anywhere on the face and still retains its speed which is in fact a big advantage if you are darting in and around a crowded face.
Here on the Goldy the points are a relative slalom course where more often than not you cannot plot the course intended for the flotsam and jetsam surrounding you! In quad mode the Little Pirate will weave in and around this picket fence of flesh at a constant running speed which gives you every chance of not only making the wave but owning it all the way.
With the speed these little suckers generate if anybody dares to drop in they will end up with 4 deep slices across the back of their heads! Thems not fighting words- just fact!
Unlike all my models which have set tails shapes, The Little Pirate will come with multiple tail choices. The roundtail, the Tombstone Tail and the Cornered Roundtail similar to the Fashion Victim.
All of these tails have some sort of round component to them which basically reinforces my belief in the relationship between the smooth uninhibited rotation of round tails and the constant speed and grip of two fins on the rail that basically bight at the wave face.
